June: Start of the monsoon. Conditions in the Himalaya change from valley to valley and year to year, so treat this page as a planning guide, not a forecast. Check current conditions with your operator or the local forest or tourism office before you commit.
Weather and temperature
Pre-monsoon heat gives way to rain. One Sikkim guide notes monsoon conditions start in June, so late June is risky there. The monsoon generally reaches the Himalaya in the second half of June.
Snow conditions
Kashmir trekking is described as running from June to September, with trails snow-covered before early July. Ladakh is in its summer window with little rain.
Road access and transport disruptions
Landslides and washed-out roads become likely in the rain belt of Uttarakhand, Himachal and Sikkim.
Daylight
Longest days of the year, but cloud can reduce the useful light.
Crowds
Ladakh is busy through the summer. We have not verified crowd data for other regions.
Difficulty considerations
Rain makes trails slippery and river crossings riskier. The rain-shadow regions are less affected.
Beginner suitability
Beginners are better off in Ladakh or other rain-shadow areas in June, or waiting for post-monsoon months, than in Sikkim or Garhwal.
