August: Peak monsoon, Kashmir at its best. Conditions in the Himalaya change from valley to valley and year to year, so treat this page as a planning guide, not a forecast. Check current conditions with your operator or the local forest or tourism office before you commit.
Weather and temperature
Wet over most of the Himalaya, dry-ish in the rain shadow. One source describes late August to early September as the prettiest time in Kashmir.
Snow conditions
Snow is mostly confined to high passes. The Pin Bhaba window continues until about mid-September.
Road access and transport disruptions
Landslides and road closures are common in the rain belt. Sikkim conditions are the same as July, with heavy fog and slippery trails.
Daylight
Days shorten slowly. Cloud still limits views.
Crowds
Ladakh summer is busy. We have not verified crowd data elsewhere.
Difficulty considerations
Rain-belt difficulty is high. Rain-shadow routes are more predictable.
Beginner suitability
Stick to Kashmir, Spiti, Lahaul and Ladakh if you are new, and with an operator.
