Trekking in Sikkim

Regional overview

Sikkim is a rain-fed eastern Himalayan state with rhododendron forests and Kanchenjunga views. Its best-known trek is Goechala, and the Singalila ridge on the Sikkim and West Bengal border has the Sandakphu to Phalut trail.

Trekking seasons

Operator guides name two good windows: April to May for rhododendrons, and September to November for clear skies. July and August are monsoon months with heavy fog, torrential rain and landslide risk, and winter is described as extremely difficult for Goechala.

Weather

Monsoon in the north-east is wetter than in the western Himalaya. Views are hidden for much of May to September, and forest trails have leeches.

Major trekking zones

Goechala and the Dzongri area lie in the west of the state. Sandakphu and Phalut lie along the Singalila ridge. North Sikkim has the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary in Yumthang Valley, with over 40 rhododendron species.

How to reach

Check road and rail gateways on each trek page. Landslides can disrupt roads in monsoon.

Permit considerations

Permits are required for certain areas, especially in Sikkim, according to one source. Confirm requirements with your operator or the state tourism department.

Altitude considerations

Altitude affects everyone, including fit people. Ascend gradually, drink water, and take a headache, nausea or unusual breathlessness seriously. If symptoms get worse, descend and get medical help. Your operator should have a clear acclimatisation and evacuation plan.

Maps

Route maps will appear on trek pages once the route data has been verified. Until then, treat any map you find online as indicative and rely on your guide for the current trail.

Travel planning

Choose April to May for flowers or September to November for views. Avoid July and August, and keep buffer days for weather.

Responsible travel

Carry all your waste out, keep to existing trails, avoid single-use plastic, respect local communities and their customs, and prefer local guides and homestays.
