Regional overview
Kashmir is known for alpine lakes, meadows and high passes. Its best-known trek is the Kashmir Great Lakes route, which runs between Sonamarg and Naranag.
Trekking seasons
Trekking is described as running from June to September, with the best window from early July to mid-September, when snow has melted from the trails. Kashmir gets little rain from July to September, and late August to early September is described as its prettiest time.
Weather
Mountain weather can still turn quickly with cold and rain at altitude. Pack for cold nights even in summer.
Major trekking zones
The Kashmir Great Lakes route passes lakes such as Gadsar (about 3,800 m) and the Nichnai Pass. Trekkers stay in tents or local homestays.
How to reach
Srinagar airport is the nearest air gateway, about 75 km from Shitkadi village near Sonamarg. Road transport runs from Srinagar to Sonamarg, with a further drive to the trailhead.
Permit considerations
Trekkers need permits from local authorities, which are available through registered trekking agencies or the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department. Also check the latest government travel advisories and local conditions before you travel.
Altitude considerations
Altitude affects everyone, including fit people. Ascend gradually, drink water, and take a headache, nausea or unusual breathlessness seriously. If symptoms get worse, descend and get medical help. Your operator should have a clear acclimatisation and evacuation plan.
Maps
Route maps will appear on trek pages once the route data has been verified. Until then, treat any map you find online as indicative and rely on your guide for the current trail.
Travel planning
Book a registered operator, aim for the July to September window, and confirm local conditions and advisories before travel.
Responsible travel
Carry all your waste out, keep to existing trails, avoid single-use plastic, respect local communities and their customs, and prefer local guides and homestays.
