Trekking in Ladakh

Regional overview

Ladakh is a high-altitude cold desert with long, dry trekking seasons and some of the highest routes in India. Leh sits at about 3,500 m, so acclimatisation is part of every itinerary.

Trekking seasons

One source puts the main trekking season from April to October, with April to June as spring and snowmelt, and July to September as the busiest and most accessible. October brings early snowfall at altitude and suits experienced trekkers, and November is severely cold. Winter, from December to March, brings heavy snow and the specialist Chadar trek on the frozen Zanskar river, with March listed as the last window.

Weather

Summer has little rain. Days can be warm in the sun, and nights are cold at altitude all year.

Major trekking zones

Popular routes include the Markha Valley and the Stok Kangri area, among others. Details will be on each trek page once verified.

How to reach

Leh is the main gateway by air. Road routes into Ladakh are seasonal and can close with snow or landslides, so check current status.

Permit considerations

Permit rules for some areas have changed over time. Confirm current requirements with your operator or the Leh district administration before booking.

Altitude considerations

Altitude affects everyone, including fit people. Ascend gradually, drink water, and take a headache, nausea or unusual breathlessness seriously. If symptoms get worse, descend and get medical help. Your operator should have a clear acclimatisation and evacuation plan. Plan acclimatisation days in Leh before any trek.

Maps

Route maps will appear on trek pages once the route data has been verified. Until then, treat any map you find online as indicative and rely on your guide for the current trail.

Travel planning

July to September is the easiest and busiest window. Spring and October suit experienced trekkers. Winter is for specialist expeditions only.

Responsible travel

Carry all your waste out, keep to existing trails, avoid single-use plastic, respect local communities and their customs, and prefer local guides and homestays.
