Winter treks in Uttarakhand: what December to February is like

Uttarakhand is one of the most popular places in India for a first snow trek. The winter window is real but narrow, and conditions shift quickly from December to the end of February.

December

One winter guide says December has less snow at lower altitudes, with routes usually still accessible. Late December is the start of the best winter window: cold, dry and stable.

January

January is the heart of the season, with snow on the trails. Nights drop below freezing even when the days are sunny, so warm layers matter more than they seem to in the afternoon sun.

February

By February, lower altitudes begin to warm, while higher routes can still hold deep snow. The same guide says snow above about 4,000 m stays through February, and advises avoiding late February and early March, when melting snow makes trails slippery and prone to rockfall.

Where the winter treks are

Many winter routes are in Garhwal, in the districts of Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Uttarkashi, Tehri Garhwal and Dehradun. Common access points include Dehradun, Rishikesh, Joshimath and Uttarkashi. Routes often listed for winter include Nag Tibba, Kartik Swami, Chopta-Tungnath, Dayara Bugyal, Kuari Pass, Har Ki Dun, Brahmatal, Kedarkantha, Roopkund and Pindari Glacier. Check each trek page for verified details before you choose.

Match the trek to you

  • Easy routes stay below about 4,000 m with roughly four to six hours of walking a day.
  • Moderate routes mean longer days and steeper sections.
  • Difficult routes involve high altitude and steep ascents, and may need an ice axe and crampons.

Permits and planning

Permits may be needed for protected areas and some routes. One guide suggests applying one to two months ahead and carrying printouts on the trek. Choose a trek that matches your fitness and altitude experience.
